Heavy rains forecast for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana due to new low-pressure system

• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the formation of a new low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal near the West Bengal and north Odisha coasts. This system is expected to bring heavy rainfall to Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, particularly in the North Andhra and Rayalaseema regions, until 2nd September
• Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are also anticipated in several areas over the next two days. The IMD attributes the current weather conditions, including a 13% deficit in rainfall across India this monsoon season, to the El Niño phenomenon.

Impact & Risks

The expected heavy rainfall may provide much-needed relief to Andhra Pradesh, which has experienced below-average rainfall this monsoon season. However, the IMD has warned of potential risks, including localised flooding, waterlogging, and disruptions to daily life. The thunderstorms and lightning could pose safety risks, and the gusty winds may cause minor damage to structures. Farmers and residents in affected areas are advised to remain cautious.
